What Is a Belarusian Keyboard / Беларуская клавіятура?
A Belarusian keyboard lets you type Cyrillic letters online without installing an IME. Typnivo combines Standard (KBDBLR) and Phonetic layouts, Latin compose for learners, and educational guides in one private workspace.
How to Type Belarusian Cyrillic Online
Open Typnivo Belarusian Keyboard. Use Virtual Keyboard (Standard default) with physical key highlighting, or switch to Latin → Cyrillic compose: type pryviitanne and press space for прывітанне.
- Standard (KBDBLR) or Phonetic layout virtual keyboard
- Latin compose: barysaw → барысаў on space
- Letter strip for Ў, І, Ы, Ё, and apostrophe
Belarusian Alphabet — 32 Letters
Belarusian uses a 32-letter Cyrillic alphabet (official since 1918). Distinctive letters: Ў, І, Ы, Ё, Э. No Щ letter — use шч for that sound. Standard Belarusian does not include Ukrainian Ґ, Є, Ї.
The Unique Letter Ў
Ў (u kratkaye) represents the /w/ sound and is central to Belarusian identity in writing: барысаў, зноў, слоў. Do not confuse with У (full /u/ vowel). BGN/PCGN romanization commonly uses w.
- Ў is unique to Belarusian among East Slavic languages
- Romanize as w (Barysaw → Барысаў)
- Standard layout: O key; compose: w
Cyrillic in Belarus
Modern Belarusian orthography was standardized in 1918 (Tarashkevich grammar). The alphabet adds Ў, І, Ы, Ё, and Э while dropping letters no longer used in standard spelling. This tool follows the official Belarusian orthography used in Belarus today (post-1933 standard). Classical Taraškievica spellings may differ slightly.
Standard vs Phonetic Layout
Belarusian (KBDBLR) is the Windows/macOS default — official ЙЦУКЕН with ў on O, і on B, ы on S. Phonetic maps Cyrillic to QWERTY by sound for diaspora learners — not a single OS standard.
- Standard — official Windows Belarusian (KBDBLR)
- Phonetic — QWERTY learner mapping for diaspora
- Switch layouts with the tab above the keyboard
Belarusian vs Russian Cyrillic
Belarusian has Ў and І; uses Ы and Э actively. Russian has щ as a letter; Belarusian does not. Russian and Belarusian layouts look similar but differ on several letter keys (e.g. O, B, S). Using the Russian layout for Belarusian text will produce wrong letters.
- Belarusian: 32 letters with Ў; no Щ letter
- Russian and Belarusian layouts differ on keys such as O, B, and S
- Belarusian uses apostrophe; Russian uses hard sign ъ
Belarusian Orthography
The apostrophe separates iotated vowels after hard consonants (с'я, с'е). Ь softens the preceding consonant. These are spelling rules, not optional decoration.
- Apostrophe for с'я, с'е after hard consonants
- Ь softens preceding consonant
- shch → шч not щ
Unicode vs Fancy Fonts
Belarusian Cyrillic is standard Unicode (U+0400–U+04FF). Copy from Typnivo into Gmail, Google Docs, and messaging apps reliably. Decorative Unicode styles usually only transform basic Latin.
Belarusian Typing Tips
Use Phonetic layout on US QWERTY; Standard if you learned KBDBLR in Belarus. In compose mode, press space after each word. Use the letter strip for Ў, І, Ы on mobile.
- Ctrl+G toggles English passthrough in compose mode
- Use Phonetic on US hardware; KBDBLR if trained in Belarus
- Disable mobile autocorrect for Latin compose

Frequently asked questions
Belarusian keyboard, input methods, and privacy — answered clearly.
How do I type Belarusian on an English keyboard?
Use Latin → Cyrillic compose: type pryviitanne, dziakuj, barysaw and press space after each word. Or switch to Phonetic virtual keyboard where QWERTY keys map to similar Cyrillic letters.
What is the difference between Standard and Phonetic?
Standard (KBDBLR) is the official Windows layout with correct positions for ў, і, ы. Phonetic maps letters to QWERTY by sound — easier for beginners abroad, but not one standardized OS layout.
How many letters are in the Belarusian alphabet?
Thirty-two letters in modern standard Belarusian Cyrillic. Distinctive letters include Ў, І, Ы, Ё, and Э. Belarusian has no Щ letter.
How is Belarusian Cyrillic different from Russian?
Belarusian has Ў and distinguishes І from Ы. Russian uses И where Belarusian may use І or Ы. Belarusian lacks the letter Щ; Russian includes it. Layouts look similar but differ on keys such as O, B, and S — use Belarusian KBDBLR for Belarusian text.
What is transliteration vs translation?
Transliteration changes script (barysaw → барысаў). Translation changes meaning (hello → прывітанне). Typnivo compose mode transliterates — it does not translate sentences.
How do I type Ў (short u)?
In compose mode, type w (BGN standard). On Standard layout, ў is on the O key. Use the letter strip for one-click insert.
How do I type the Belarusian apostrophe?
Type ' in compose mode (s'ya → с'я). On Standard layout, ' is on the ] key. Use the strip button for quick insert.
Does Belarusian use щ?
Standard Belarusian has no Щ letter. The /shch/ sound is written as шч (two letters). In compose mode, shch → шч.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes. Use the virtual keyboard sheet or Latin compose mode. Touch-friendly letter strip for Ў, І, Ы, Ё, and apostrophe.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser — zero server uploads.
What is беларуская клавіятура?
Беларуская клавіятура means Belarusian keyboard — software or online layout for typing Cyrillic Belarusian text.
Will stylish Unicode text preserve Belarusian Cyrillic?
Yes. The Belarusian Font Generator applies decorative Unicode wrappers and partial mathematical styling while preserving Ў, і, ё, ы, э, and ь — never converting to Russian-style spelling.
