Practical tips for Czech input — layouts, accents, and common questions answered below.

What Is a Czech Keyboard / Česká Klávesnice?

A Czech keyboard (Česká klávesnice) lets you type the 15 special Czech letters — č, ř, š, ž, ě, ů, and acute vowels — essential for correct spelling. Typnivo combines typing, diacritic checking, and typography tools in one private workspace.

How to Type Czech Characters Online (č ř š ž ě ů)

Open Typnivo Czech Keyboard and use Easy Accents: Quick Compose (r= → ř, e== → ě, u== → ů) or TypeIt dead keys. Switch to Virtual Keyboard for authentic QWERTZ or Programmers layout.

  • QWERTZ or Programmers layout virtual keyboard
  • Quick compose for č, ř, š, ž, ě, ů, acute vowels
  • Number row 2–0 on QWERTZ: ě š č ř ž ý á í é

Czech Alphabet & Diacritics

Czech uses the Latin alphabet plus 15 letters with diacritics: eight háček letters (č, ď, ě, ň, ř, š, ť, ž), six acute vowels (á, é, í, ó, ú, ý), and ů (ring). The letter ř is unique to Czech; ě is essentially never word-initial in native words.

Háček vs Acute vs Ů (Ring)

Háček (ˇ) marks palatal or fricative consonants — č, š, ž, ř. Acute (čárka ´) marks long vowels — á, é, í, ó, ú, ý. Ů (kroužek) marks long /u/ after consonants; ú marks long /u/ at word start or after prefixes (úkol vs kůň).

QWERTZ vs Programmers Keyboard Layouts

Czech (QWERTZ, KBDCZ) is the Windows default — Y/Z swapped vs US, diacritic letters on the number row (2=ě, 5=ř). Czech Programmers keeps US punctuation with Czech letters on 2–0 and AltGr for ú/ů — ideal for diaspora and coding.

Czech Keyboard Shortcuts

Quick Compose: c= č, r= ř, e== ě, u== ů, s= š, z= ž, a= á. TypeIt: ' + vowel → acute, / + letter → háček, ` + u → ů. Use the accent strip for one-click insertion.

Private Czech typing in your browser

All typing and diacritic checking run locally in your browser. Typnivo never uploads your Czech text to a server — unlike server-side correctors or translators.

Czech keyboard, input methods, and privacy — answered clearly.

How do I type ř on an English keyboard?

How do I type ě and ů?

Quick Compose: e== → ě (before e= → é), u== → ů (before u= → ú). On QWERTZ layout, press 2 for ě; ů is on the dedicated key beside L.

What is the difference between ú and ů?
