How Estonian Letters Work in Unicode
Estonian uses the Latin alphabet with six letters not found in basic English: ä, ö, ü, õ, š, and ž. Each is a single Unicode code point — for example ä is U+00E4, õ is U+00F5, and š is U+0161. They are stored as precomposed characters in normal Estonian text and must survive copy/paste unchanged.
The letter õ is especially important: it represents a vowel unique to Estonian (and a few related languages). It is not the same as Finnish ö or German ö. Replacing õ with o changes meaning — õhtu (evening) is not the same word as ohtu.
