Estonian Alphabet — 27 Letters
Estonian uses a Latin alphabet with 27 letters: A B D E F G H I J K L M N O P R S Š T U V Z Ž Õ Ä Ö Ü. Letters C, Q, W, X, Y appear only in foreign words. The six special letters users type daily are ä, ö, õ, ü, š, and ž.

Ä, ö, and ü are umlaut-marked vowels with their own sounds — käsi (hand), öö (night), üks (one). Õ is unique to Estonian: an unrounded back vowel [ɤ] in words like õun (apple) and õnn (happiness). Do not substitute ae, oe, or umlaut-free letters in formal Estonian text.

The Unique Letter Õ
Õ (U+00D5) is Estonia's most distinctive letter — added in the 19th century by Otto Wilhelm Masing to distinguish words that were once spelled with ö. It represents [ɤ], a vowel with no English equivalent: mouth shaped like 'o' but lips unrounded. Confusing õ with o or ö changes meaning.
Š and Ž in Loanwords
