Slovak typing guide

Practical tips for Slovak input — layouts, accents, and common questions answered below.

What Is a Slovak Keyboard / Slovenská Klávesnica?

A Slovak keyboard (Slovenská klávesnica) lets you type the 17 special Slovak letters — č, š, ž, ô, ä, ľ, and acute vowels — essential for correct spelling. Typnivo combines typing, diacritic checking, and educational guides in one private workspace.

How to Type Slovak Characters Online (č š ž ô ä ľ)

Open Typnivo Slovak Keyboard and use Easy Accents: Quick Compose (l= → ľ, o== → ô, a== → ä, r= → ŕ) or TypeIt dead keys. Switch to Virtual Keyboard for authentic QWERTZ or QWERTY layout.

  • QWERTZ or QWERTY layout virtual keyboard
  • Quick compose for č, š, ž, ľ, ô, ä, ŕ, acute vowels
  • Number row 2–0 on QWERTZ: ľ š č ť ž ý á í é

Slovak Alphabet & Diacritics

Slovak uses a 46-letter Latin alphabet — the longest Slavic alphabet — with digraphs ch, dz, dž counting as single letters. Seventeen letters carry diacritics: mäkčeň (č, ď, ľ, ň, š, ť, ž), dĺžeň (á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, ĺ, ŕ), dve bodky (ä), and vokáň (ô).

Dĺžeň vs Mäkčeň vs Vokáň vs Ä

Dĺžeň (´) marks long vowels and syllabic l/r — á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, ĺ, ŕ. Mäkčeň (ˇ) softens consonants — č, š, ž, ľ, ň, ď, ť. Vokáň (ˆ) on ô spells the /uo/ diphthong (stôl, kôň). Ä (dve bodky) marks wide e in a few words (mäso).

QWERTZ vs QWERTY Keyboard Layouts

Slovak QWERTZ (KBDSL, Windows default) swaps Y and Z vs US keyboards. Diacritic letters sit on the number row: 2=ľ, 3=š, 4=č, 5=ť, 6=ž, 7=ý, 8=á, 9=í, 0=é, plus ú, ä, ô, ň on letter keys. Slovak QWERTY (KBDSL1) keeps US Y/Z positions for diaspora users.

Slovak vs Czech Keyboard — Key Differences

Both use QWERTZ with similar number-row diacritics, but Slovak has ä, ô, ĺ, ľ, ŕ while Czech has ě, ř, ů. The letter ř (Czech rolled fricative) does not exist in Slovak — Slovak uses ŕ (syllabic long r). Czech ů/ú rules differ from Slovak ú.

Slovak Keyboard Shortcuts

Quick Compose: c= č, l= ľ, l== ĺ, o== ô, a== ä, r= ŕ, s= š, z= ž. TypeIt: ' + vowel → acute, / + letter → mäkčeň, ^ + o → ô, " + a → ä. Use the accent strip for one-click insertion.

All typing and diacritic checking run locally in your browser. Typnivo never uploads your Slovak text to a server.

Slovak keyboard, input methods, and privacy — answered clearly.

How do I type ô and ä on an English keyboard?

What is the difference between ĺ and ľ?

How do I type ŕ?

Quick Compose: r= → ŕ. TypeIt: ' + r → ŕ. Do not confuse with Czech ř — Slovak has no ř letter.

How does ludia become ľudia?

No. Typnivo helps you type Slovak characters. It does not translate English to Slovak.

Can I use this on mobile?

Yes. Use the accent dock or virtual keyboard sheet. Disable OS autocorrect if = shortcuts conflict in Easy Accents mode.

Will stylish Unicode text work for Slovak?

Unicode decorative fonts only transform basic A–Z in most styles. Slovak diacritics (č, ô, ľ) stay plain — type Slovak here with full diacritic support.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser — zero server uploads.

What is slovenská klávesnica?

Slovenská klávesnica means Slovak keyboard — layouts for typing mäkčeň and dĺžeň letters on computers and phones.
